One Village One Product for developing village around IPB

Agriculture refers to the production of food and goods through farming and forestry. Agriculture was the key development that led to the rise of civilization; with the husbandry of domesticated animals and plants (i.e. crops) creating food surpluses that enabled the development of more densely populated and stratified societies (Wikipedia). But it’s not enough without we use the high technology. IPB, as an agricultural university, has a Faculty of Agricultural Technology that applies technology in agriculture. This is a big role for IPB for developing country especially in agriculture. There are so many researches from Agro technology students but they’re not applied well for citizen especially the citizen around IPB. Actually, there are many ideas for developing country to improve the agriculture, one of them is by a program called “One Village One Product”.

The One village one product movement or OVOP is a program for regional development. It began in Ōita Prefecture, Japan, in 1979 when the then-governor Morihiko Hiramatsu (born 1924) advocated the program. Communities selectively produce goods with high added value. One village produces one competitive and staple product as a business to gain sales revenue to improve the standard of living for the residents of that village (Wikipedia).

The objective of One Village One Product is to explore and to promote creative and innovative product from local resources that have a unique things, high value, but still keep the environment sustainability that have a good image and can compete well.

The village around IPB has a special commodity that can be mainstay agricultural commodity such as red pepper. Red pepper is a potential product to make pickle. As we know that Bogor is popular as the pickle city (asinan), which is made from many kind of fresh fruits. It’s a new innovation to make special red pepper pickle. One of the example technologies that can be used in processing the pickle is drying. They can use the dryer from Agricultural Engineering, with the permission of course. And for the nutrient, Food Science and Technology can tell them the best way to process the red pepper. And agro industrial has a big role in marketing and packing. Beside that, we have to make cooperation with local government in financial capital.

The concept of the OVOP is separate into two groups. First group which is the local citizens have a role to produce and to process the red pepper pickle and for the second groups which is the government have a role in the financial capital. The steps in processing have to be with high technology, not using the manual processing anymore. Furthermore, the product can be sold in local and national.

For developing a village, we need to joint all of department in agricultural technology so the implementation would be better.
